Aarhus (Danemark), Aarhus Kunstbygning - Center of contemporary art
Destrøy Design
28.08 > 31.10.2010
The present exhibition brings together contemporary objects, installations and artifacts created by international designers and artists over the past 40 years. They all belong to the collection of the Frac Nord-Pas de Calais, an institution dedicated to contemporary art, located in Dunkirk (France).
The choice of the works is eclectic, due to the fact that they were purchased by different international experts (Jan Hoet, Nicolaus Schafhausen, Chris Dercon, amongst many others) over a period of about 25 years. It is Important ot know that the Frac also possesses several important design-objects that marked the history of contemporary culture : unique pieces made by Ettore Sottsass, Achille & Pier Castigioni, Charles Eames, Olivier Mourgue, Nemo, Verner Panton, and Giancarlo Piretti. Purposefully, these “referential” works aren’t included in this show, but definitely cast their shadow on it, as they served as inspiration for so many artists of today.
The Frac Nord-Pas de Calais was one of the first French institutions to create an awareness for the Important role played by design in the evolution of everyday life. By confronting these avant-garde creations with the work of contemporary artists, a debate was launched questioning our relationship with (art) objects and the possible influence they could have in our society and on our immediate environment.
DESTRØY/DESIGN purports to offer an analysis of this unique approach of two different but related fields: the exhibition concentrates on the complex relationship between the consumption -based star- status of contemporary designers and artists, and questions the constantly changing position and importance of the object in today’s industrialized world.
